Unweighted vs Weighted GPA — What Is the Difference

An unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale. An A in a regular English class gives the same 4.0 points as an A in an AP class. Most colleges receive both types when reviewing applications.

A weighted GPA gives extra points for harder courses. AP and IB courses use a 5.0 scale and Honors courses use a 4.5 scale. This means a student taking difficult courses can have a weighted GPA above 4.0, which reflects the extra challenge.

When comparing GPAs, always check whether the number is weighted or unweighted. A 3.8 unweighted is very strong. A 3.8 weighted with no AP courses is a different situation.

What Is a Good High School GPA

A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good and meets the minimum requirements for most four year colleges. A GPA of 3.5 or above is considered strong and makes a student competitive at selective schools. A GPA of 3.8 or above is excellent and is competitive at highly selective universities.

That said, colleges look at your GPA in context. A 3.6 GPA while taking six AP courses is viewed more favorably than a 3.8 with only regular courses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is high school GPA calculated?

Add up the grade points for all your courses and divide by the number of courses. For example, if you have four courses with grade points of 4.0, 3.7, 3.3, and 3.0, the total is 14.0 divided by 4 which equals a 3.5 GPA.

Does GPA include failed courses?

Yes. A failed course earns 0.0 grade points and is included in the GPA calculation. This can significantly lower your GPA. Some schools have a grade forgiveness policy where retaking a course replaces the original grade — check with your school counselor.

What GPA do I need to get into college?

Most four year colleges accept students with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Competitive state universities typically look for 3.0 to 3.5. Selective private universities often expect 3.7 or above. Use this calculator to track where you stand and plan accordingly.
